The American Bullfrog is one of the most well-known frogs across America. Male frogs of this species make a low call that sounds like “Jug-a-rum''. The call resembles a cow's sound, which is why it is called the “American Bullfrog”. These frogs are the largest frogs in North America. Even the tadpoles are large, the largest sizing up to around 6.75 in (17). The largest full-grown frogs can size up to around 8 in (20 cm). American Bullfrogs will eat almost anything they can fit in their mouths. This includes animals like insects, mice, birds, and even snakes. The American Bullfrog catches its food by being an ambush predator. It will sit very still waiting for something to pass by and eat it. American Bullfrogs are hunted at all stages of life by insects, crayfish, fish, other frogs, turtles, birds, mammals, and even humans. You can find these large frogs in places like ponds, rivers, and creeks. Males are highly territorial and will defend their territory from other frogs. Female American Bullfrogs are slightly larger than male frogs. Although they are classified as the least concern, their numbers are dropping due to habitat loss, water pollution, and pesticides.
